an update from dad

Hey everyone, this is dad writing to you tonight. (This is my first ever blog post so if I mess up too badly please forgive me.) I am sitting beside Cora's bed, and she is finally sleeping peacfully. It has been a really long couple of days since Jess last updated, so I will try to fill you all in from where she left off.

On tuesday morning we started out the day learning that Cora had to go back into surgery. Her incision, which goes all of the way across her abdoman, was seeping abdominal fluid and therefore needed immediate attention. This was quite a shock to us since the doctors had mentioned on monday that we might be able to go home the next day. The surgery only took about 45 minutes, but Cora was a wreck the rest of the day after coming off of the anesthesia. She also started to have a lot more trouble breathing, and getting comfortable. This was due to the large amount of fluid in her abdominal cavity and lungs. The doctors also think that her liver is enlarging so rapidly that it is contributing to the problems as well. That has made for two very painful days for Cora and her parents. It is soooo hard to watch your little girl be in that much pain and distress. As a result of all of this the pediatrician the surgeons and the oncologist decided that she should start her chemo as soon as possible. So instead of starting next monday like originally planned, we moved back down to ICU around 4:30 pm wednesday to start the first treatment. The chemo will last for around 80 hours and is all administered through the cvc line that was placed in her chest during surgery. The oncologist also warned us of the many risks that go along with this first round of treatment. (That was the point of the day where both parents lost it.) The positive part of this is that if the tumor responds well to the chemo it should start shrinking things in 24-48 hours.

The one highlite of the last two days was my brother flying in from China. He got in late tuesday night. It has been so encouraging to have him around.
This is a picture of Cora taken on tuesday night. I think she is getting a bit tired of all this.
Thank you so much to all of you who have been praying, visiting, and caring for us. We would not be able to make it through all of this with out you. We have also been so overwhelmed by the number of people who are praying for us across the country and around the world. Words can not describe our grattitude. We know that prayer is powerful, and we have felt God's had in all of this. Right now we are holding onto the hope that we serve a powerful God, and that he can heal our daughter.
I Peter 5:10-11
And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast. To him be the power for ever and ever Amen.
Here are few things to pray for.
Praise:
For an excellent team of doctors and nurses

For the thousands of people that are lifting us up in prayer
Prayer:
For a miracle
That God would minister to Cora in way that only He can
That Cora would not be in too much pain and that the chemo would not make her too sick
That the Chemo would go smoothly, and not have any of the dangerous side-effects
That the test results would come back as the more favorable type of cancer
That God would continue to give us the strength that we need to get through this.
That the cancer would start shrinking soon and give Cora some relief

I just found your blog, I wanted to say that you are in my prayers. I absolutely cannot imagine what you are going through. My sister had a baby boy at 27 weeks, and when he came out he was 1 pound 12 ounces, and the dr's brought her in a room and told her that they had done everything they could for him, that he was so sick, they just couldn't see him making it. Today, he is making it. He has been with us for two months now and is surpassing all of the dr's expectations, every single time. He is truly a miracle. She will be ok. She will make it through this. Hello! My name is Kristi Toews and I'm from Lawrence, KS. My son had neuroblastoma as a baby (diagnosed at 5 months old) as well. He is now almost 5 years old and has been cancer-free for over 4 years! He is "normal" in every way shape and form. We have shocked a lot of people when we tell him that he had cancer as a baby. Forgive me as I haven't read through all of your posts, so I don't know a lot about your situation. Someone just emailed me and informed me about Cora just being diagnosed. I know several survivors of infant neuroblastoma!! If you'd like me to send you their websites, please let me know. Survivor stories always helped me get through my son's treatment period (4 rounds of chemo and several surgeries). I did read in your journal that Cora is under 12 months and that is GREAT. I'm sure you already know that her prognosis is so much better when you are under 12 (or some say 18) months. We received our treatment from Children's Mercy in KC. We had a great experience there. I'm leaving you with both my son's website and another infant neuroblastoma website of a good friend of mine. Please email me for any reason at any time. toewsk@yahoo.com

Big Prayers for Cora from Virginia. I read on one of the blogs I follow about your sweet girl. Our daughter Ellie is 6. Last April she was diagnosed with a brain tumor (s-PNET) which is very rare & aggressive. Our world, like yours, was rocked hard. It is the hardest thing to see your child have to endure surgeries, needle sticks, radiation, chemotherapy and countless blood transfusions. But... Ellie's cancer has been one of the best things that have ever happened to us. I know that sounds bizarre and it is but we turned to God to get us through this. Our community turned to God and we were given so many signs from God. More than I ever thought possible. I KNOW GOD IS THERE and I know that we all will be OK regardless.
Ellie went to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis because they offered us the best hope. It's an amazing place. Ellie was there posterchild this past Christmas and she brought such needed awareness to pediatric cancer. We have been finished with treatment for 2 months. It took 8 months to get through it but we were blessed and God carried Ellie through. She is doing well and we feel she will continue. We are on a 5 year wait and watch but we have learned to live in the moment and to appreciate everything.

Please let me know if you need anything or if I can offer any advice or just an ear to listen. It is a hard journey you are on but you will come out and you will be better for it. KEEP THE FAITH and ask everyone to PRAY!

Psalm 46:10 helped me out so much when the health of my unborn child was uncertain. It reminded me to stay calm and remember that He was in control of our situation. Praying for His comfort and peace as you head down tthe long road ahead.

I know you have lots of support and prayers, but I am throwing one more your way. I have a friend Dave who's son Jake was diagnosed in a similar fashion. Jake is now in Remission and if you like he has a page: http://www.caringbridge.org/co/jacobtylercohen/ If you want to leave any questions or comments from one parent to another I am sure he would not mind it. Also, if you are hosting any sort of fundraiser for your son, please let me know and I can get some gift cards to throw in the basket. email me at antibloggedy@gmail(dot)com. Please give your little Cora one more set of hugs and kisses from Kalei, Kai(2yr) and Violet(10mo) who will also say a little prayer for Cora.

I found these verses in the Psalms, and thought of you:

29 I am in pain and distress;
may your salvation, O God, protect me.

30 I will praise God's name in song
and glorify him with thanksgiving.

31 This will please the LORD more than an ox,
more than a bull with its horns and hoofs.
(Psalm 69:29-31; I left verse 31 in there hoping it might mean something to Joel:)

As you know, Jesus is with you and loves you all dearly.

Cora is beautiful!!! I am sad to say we have journeyed the Neuroblastoma journey. Our 3 yr twin was dx Dec. 06 and went to be with Jesus 1/23/07. One thing to be encouraged with is that is Cora is younger, our little Joel was 3 and it is much harder. I will tell you the only way I have made it through this is by His grace, the words of scripture and now the hope that I will see my Joel again. Its a hard battle but nothing is too hard for our Lord. Keep praying and pleading, may His will be done!!

I just found you from "Whatever". My heart breaks for you. While I have never walked in your shoes, I do have a 3 year old little girl who used to have cheeks just like Cora. In these pictures, it was as if I was looking at my very own baby. I can't imagine what you are feeling and going through.

But we serve a mighty, loving God, don't we. And if His plans are perfect, who are we to question them? So much easier to say than to do, right? My prayer is that you'll continue to seek HIS will as you care for Cora. I pray, even now, that His will is to restore and heal your precious baby.

Cora and both your families will remain in my prayers.

Father, may this chemo kill every cancerous cell, in the name of Jesus. Protect Cora's healthy cells, Lord, and give her relief from pain. Help her to rest this evening, allowing her parents to also rest. Help this precious family to feel Your comfort and peace. Give the doctors great wisdom. Father, I'm asking for Cora's complete and total healing. I rebuke this cancer in the name of Jesus!

Amen

Blessings to you...
