giveaway week {flitty,twitty, and itty bitty}
Levi and I LOVE to read.
As Levi gets older it has been so fun to share some of those books with him and read new ones that even his mama hasn't heard before. It is funny how Levi picks his favorites. Every few weeks it seems like he has three or four favorites that he wants to read over and over and over...and then in a few weeks he has new favorites that he wants to read over and over and over. Joel and I are thankful that his favorites change...you can only read the same book over and over and over so many times. :)
I have been on the search for some Christmas books to read to Levi and Griffin that talk about the real meaning of Christmas. I would love to have a stack of Christmas books that we pull out every year to read. The Christmas Birdie is the perfect addition. What a fun way to recall that most important day of Jesus' birth through the eyes of a little birdie.
Here is what Mary Ellen's website said about The Christmas Birdie:
How would you like to have witnessed the birth of the most important person who ever lived? That is exactly what happened to a little birdie named Flit. What started out as disaster turned into wonder in a stable in Bethlehem one winter’s night.
One of the best things about being a kindergarten teacher (besides the kids of course) was all the books I got to read everyday. I have always loved children's books.
These are his favorites right now:
Otis by Loren Long
Knuffle Bunny Free by Mo Willems
Thank You, God by PK Hallinan
No No Yes Yes by Leslie Patricelli (a silly book, but he LOVES it)
I'm sure in a few weeks he will have a new list of favorites.
Last week we were given two new books. How exciting! The author of these books, Mary Ellen Tippin, is a friend of my family. In fact my family was introduced to the Tippins when we first moved to the area many, many years ago. Mary Ellen and my mom have been best buddies ever since.
These two books are about three little birds--Flitty, Twitty, and Itty Bitty--and their birdie family. They are a little long for Levi's age, but I was actually surprised how they held his attention. I only had to paraphrase a few pages because he was ready to move on. :) He loved the birdies and was always looking for the nest in the illustrations. My nephew and niece are almost 3 and 5 and they love these books. They ask to read them whenever they go to Grammy's house. I think in a few months Levi will love them too...maybe they will even make his list of favorites.
What I really like about these books is that they allow you to talk about God to your children and how he cares so much about every part of our lives...He even cares about the little birdies. Flitty, Twitty and Itty Bitty is based off of these verses:
Not one little birdie will fall to the ground without your Heavenly Father knowing all about it. So why should you be afraid? You are even more valuable to God then birdies.
Matthew 10:29 and 31
Here is an overview of Flitty, Twitty and Itty Bitty from Mary Ellen's website:
Does anyone really care what happens to baby birdies? God does. If God cares about baby birdies we can be sure He cares about each of us, too! The Birdie Family: Papa, Mama, Flitty, Twitty, and little Itty Bitty find out God is watching over them and their family when trouble "blows" their way.
Mary Ellen is giving away TWO sets of her books along with an audio CD of Flitty, Twitty, and Itty Bitty (there is also a birdie song and bonus story included on the CD).

Favorite Christmas book (and movie) - Polar Express
Favorite preschool books are the Llama Llama books - so cute. I also have a 7 year old that loves the Junie B. Jones books - hilarious!!
At our house we believe in both the magic and miracle of Christmas. I love the book called 'What is Christmas?' It is all about how Santa, and Christmas Trees, and lights are so much fun, but as fun as they are, they are not what Christmas is all about. I love that the book makes it ok for the magic and the miracle to be celebrated. I also love 'The Night Before Christmas.' :)
One of my favorite Christmas books was always "Apple Tree Christmas." It's for older kids, and to be honest thinking back I don't know if it was THAT stellar of a book or if it was more the sentimentality of taking it out year after year that made me love it =)
My 11 month old's favorite book is "I Love You Through and Through". . .someday I should count how many times a day we read it!
Can't go wrong with "the night before Christmas" - it's a classic. I need ideas too!!
Have you read Peanut Butter and Jellyfishes? It's a super cute ABC book that we love. Thanks for the chance to win! I love children's books too. Reading is my favorite thing to do with my kids :)
Favorite Christmas Book - The Tale of Three Trees. It's not exclusively Christmas, but we used to read it every Christmas!
Favorite Children's Book - Don't even get me started! The one I buy for anyone having a baby is "Love You Forever" by Robert Munsch! In fact, I just read it to my students yesterday and teared up at the end.
Too many to choose from. Kids love Big Red Barn right now
My favorite Christmas book is one from my childhood that my parents have now purchased for our two little ones..."The Smells of Christmas".
Here are a few of our favorites - so hard to pick one! :)
"The Velveteen Rabbit" - the version with illustrations by Donna Green and "The Quiltmaker's Gift", though it might be a few years before Levi would be ready for these.
"On Morning Wings" by Reeve Lindberg (a great paraphrase of Psalm 139 with beautiful illustrations)
"I Love You Through & Through" (a board book)
My youngest, Ben, who's 2, would probably recommend the following:
-a shaped board book, called "Tractor" by DK Publishers and I think of Levi every time I read it to him.
-"Brown Bear, Brown Bear"
-"Vrooom, It's Color Time" in the TruckTown series
(I haven't read these, but did you know there is a book series out there featuring "Tractor Mac" and includes, "Tractor Mac Saves Christmas?" I saw them on amazon.)
My all time favorite "Make way for Ducklings..." but its a bit two long for my little guy right now...he loves (at the moment:) "Thank you God"...we read it EVERY DAY...and I think my husband and I have it memorized:)
My favorite Christma Book is the 12 days of Christmas.
The Night Before Christmas and Polar Express are 2 of my favorites.
Polar Express!
My favorite children's book is Goodnight Moon - especially because the author Margaret Wise Brown and I are both alums of Hollins University (I always get excited about alums because our school is so small).
hopeswenson@gmail.com
Polar Express, The Night Before Christmas, The Christmas Miracle, Room for a Little One...I'm a former 1st grade teacher, so the list could go on and on!!
My niece's favourite book at the moment is Little Rabbit Foo-Foo - she knows ALL the words! So can tell when daddy skips pages.
One of my favourite childrens books though is; On the Night You Were Born by Nancy Tillman.
Little Boy by Alison McGhee is ADORABLE too!
Favourite Christmas books include;
The Jolly Christmas Postman
Mrs Pepperpot's Christmas
How The Grinch Stole Christmas
& for older children;
Letters From Father Christmas - JRR Tolkien
We are really into the "goodnight Moon" book right now. I have two boys age 1 & 3 and they both love it!
We love reading too! My kids love all the Eric Carle books.
"Green Eggs and Ham" has always been a hit for our kids, but as far as Christmas goes, I would have to say "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" is one of the favorites. We have several, as we love to read!
Before I started staying home, I was a 2nd grade teacher with my masters in School Library- I love this giveaway!!! My favorite Christmas books are Polar Express and the Grinch Who Stole Christmas. My favorite everyday children's book is anything by Mo Willems, Click Clack Moo Cows that Type, and the Monster Who Ate My Peas- its adorable! Thanks again for the great giveaways!!
My favorite Christmas book is definitely the Polar Express. Love! I used to teach preschool and then 2nd grade, so my list of favorite children's books could go on forever, but right now our favorites (3 & 1 yr old) are Goodnight Moon, Is Your Mama A Llama?, Tumble Bumble, and much to my chagrin, F is for Farm (this has been a favorite for about 2 months. Getting a little over it).
My daughter loves books as well. What a great giveaway!

My favorite Christmas book is Polar Express and my favorite books in general are Amelia Bedlia or the Llama llama books. We just love them!
The Night Before Christmas :)
I love the "Bear feels scared, Bear snores on" all the bear books. SO fun to read.
We love the Eric Carle books! They're all good. "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" is the one my kids have loved first.
I'm not sure about Christmas books. There is a series of board books at Family Christians Stores. We have "The Jesus Story". They also have books for Easter and Christmas. I love the repeating of key phrases and whole verses from the Bible. They are such good starter books.
it's a little hard for me to pick my favorite children's book (i LOVE books), but one that we really like is The Hiccupotamus by Aaron Zenz.
have you heard of Max Lucado? i think you'd enjoy his Christmas book titled The Crippled Lamb.
i also love to teach my children about Jesus and the real meaning of Christmas!
-joanna
We love new books at our house too! Parker is in the stage where he will just sometimes sit and look at a book while I cook dinner. We spend a lot of our day reading books and I agree new ones are always welcome! Some of his favorites right now ( at 23 months) are anything that have to do with trucks of course but also the Usborne touchy feely books, there's a lot of them that we have. We also have a book by the same author as No,No, Yes, Yes it's called Yummy Yucky and it's funny and makes him laugh.
I was recently looking for the same type of Christmas book and stumbled across "The Story of Christmas" by Patricia A. Pingry. It tells the story quickly and simply enough for my 18 month old to stay interested. We love books too!
Anything from the Usborne collection is great!
The littlest angel, pop up books of the Christmas story. Christmas stories are so much fun to read to the little grand daughters!
The Legend of the Candy Cane.
I love Night Before Christmas. Another book that I love is How Full Is Your Bucket. It has a great message!

i got mine on ebay for about 10.00
We had "The Night Before Christmas" in a little golden book when we were kids. Dad would read it with the words mixed up, or in pig latin, or something funny, so it was definitely a favorite Christmas book for us. Hoping to find some good ideas from the comments, My three and a half year old is beyond excited for Christmas this year.
My son 3, loves Goldilocks and the three bears. There are many versions but this is a flap book that is more interactive. He loves it.

I would read Max Lucados "You are Special" every year around Christmas time to be public school students. It was my way to bring Jesus to them, without being overly obvious. Then I would share the Christmas story. Sorry the book itself isn't really Christmasy. We also LOVE Polar Express.
We have always loved all the Sandra Boynton books. They're short and silly and perfect for the littlest listeners. All of them. :)

She switches out her favorites every couple of months. My favorite Christmas book for toddlers is titled "What is Christmas?" and gives the true meaning of Christmas in a way toddlers can understand. It is written by Michelle Medlock and she actually has other books of the same, "What is Easter?" "What is Thanksgiving?" We love them all! Favorite Christmas books:
How the Grinch Stole Christmas
and there was one about the birth of Jesus (Luke 2:1-??) that we read last year that my daughter loved and memorized, but I need to dig it out and see what the title is! Ever since I was a little girl, my sisters and I would recite the Luke 2:1-?? passage on Christmas Eve. WHen we grew up and had kids, we passed this down to our kids. My daughter is too young, but I wanted her to be a part of it, and understand it, and this book did a good job putting into words a 3 year old could understand :)
We have a lot of favorite books in our house, but one we really like is called, "There's a party in Heaven" (http://www.amazon.com/Theres-Party-Heaven-Gary-Bower/dp/0970462182/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1321638085&sr=8-1)

"God Gave Us Christmas" by Lisa Tawn Bergren.
I don't have a favorite Christmas book, but I do have two favorite children's books.
One is called "I Love You The Purplest". It is about two brothers who love to compete for their mama's love and attention. She makes it very clear in a very beautiful way that they don't need to compete because she loves them both so much for just who they are. I used to change the names when I read it to my two oldest girls. They always loved it and still do at ages 13 and 10. I think it would be a great book fot your boys as well.
My other favorite is called "Guess How Much I Love You?". It is about a daddy rabbit and his son. It is all about how much they love eachother. It is one of the sweetest books. I love it because it is a good Daddy book. I think Joel would enjoy reading this to your boys.
Sorry for the long post. I just really love those two books. I think I would love the ones you shared too. I have a little boy who absolutely loves birds. These would be perfect for him!
Thank you so much for sharing your precious family with all of us. God bless you!
We love "God gave us you". It's not a Christmas book, but it's with polar bears and seems very Christmas-y. We read it a lot more in the winter time!
I love this post! This is exactly my life with a 21 month old little girl. I love that she loves books so much, and that her favorites change too :) Right now her favorites(mine too) are "I'll Teach my Dog 100 words" and Richard Scarry's "Best Word Book Ever".
Tressa S.

I was just saying this to my husband the other night, that we need to get some books together for our son who is 3, about the real meaning of Christmas to like you said, pull out the stack year after year! I was a pre-K teacher and used to LOVE going to the library to get new fun books for my students! My favorite book is Goodnight Moon, only because it was the first book I read to my son when he was born and that makes it special to me!
elizabeth {dot} houchins at gmail {dot} com

Alexander and Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day. Best ever.
Might have to check back here for good Christmas books because I need suggestions too. One we checked out last year from the library and that Ori LOVED was The Legend of the Candy Cane by Lori Walburg. It definitely points to Jesus and even though it was long, Ori wanted to read it again and again. I just got Mary Ellen's first book and CD and we love it!! I'd love to have another copy to give as a gift (and keep the Christmas one for us! hehe)
I don't have any favorite Christmas books, sadly. I love Sandra Boynton books...we have almost all of them and my son really likes them too. :)
My favorite children's book is "Goodnight Moon." I love looking at big full moons and love reading this book to my 18-month old grandson. Books are the best!!!

I love anything by nancy Tillman. I read on the night you were born to Christian when he was born and when he went to heaven. I just ordered her new one titled wherever you are my love will find you. I can't get through her books reading to my almost 3 year old without tearing up but the message is just beautiful and my prayer is it makes my son feel so very loved!
I love reading all the Christmas book suggestions! My son's fave last year was the smells on Christmas. I have sweet memories of him learning to say candy cane ha ha can't wait to see which one he likes this year!

Our little boy loved this book that his grandma got him last year that lights up and plays the song "O little town of Bethlehem". It is a board book as well which is nice for Levi's age.

My daughter is a little bit younger than Levi and she also loves Knuffle Bunny. I checked out Knuffle Bunny Two from the library and she wasn't interested, but "Two" and "Free" are on her Christmas list anyway. She also loves, Take Time to Say Please by Mo Williams. I was also a teacher before being a stay at home mommy and love pulling out books as she grows. I have a great Christmas book, I believe it's called, Who's in the Barn, or something of the like. Anyways, you see each of the farm animals and then at the end, Baby Jesus is asleep among them. Wish I knew the name off hand, but won't know until I pull the Christmas books out.
My son loves a DK board book we got at costco called "Things That Go". It has a page of emergency vehicles, a page of farm vehicles, a page of construction vehicles, etc. He loves it so much that we got a 2nd copy to give to a friend and it's *his* favorite book too!

The Jesus Storybook Bible is wonderful, but didn't hold my kids' attention until age 4. When they were younger, I liked The Big Red Barn, Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, and all the Curious George books. Fun.
I love anything Dr.Seuss but all childrens books are so cute! My aunt had a baby shower in February of this year and instead of people giving cards with the gifts she asked them to give their fav book and write something(to their twin girls). I think that was a AMAZING idea!! I LOVE to read and hope my kids will someday too! Thanks!! :)
