the shelter of God's promises {a giveaway}

Where do you turn for shelter in the worst storms of life?

At my Bible study a few weeks ago, our lecturer said that we turn to the phone before we turn to the throne...or texting, or blogs, or facebook, or twitter, or however we stay connected with people. So true. We often run to the first available person, looking for a quick fix. Someone to listen to our worries or sorrows. Someone to assure us that everything is going to be okay. And yet we fail to go straight to our Maker, The One who knows us best. We are swayed by our ever changing emotions and forget to stand firm on God's Truth. We forget to stand under the shelter of God's promises. And God's promises will never fail us!

I just started reading The Shelter of God's Promises by Sheila Walsh. As I read the first chapter I was struck by these words:

I would not have made it this far without the promises of God.

As I began thinking about the promises of God and what they have meant to me in my life, I could so relate to those words. I would not have made it to where I am today without the promises of God. When Cora died I was forced to ask myself if I really believed God's promises. Did I really believe what I had always said I believe? I had to choose to hold onto God's promises when everything around me was falling apart. And I am so thankful I did. God's promises are true. God's promises are dependable. God's promises give us hope and a future even when everything else comes crashing down. There is no way I would have made it this far without the promises of God.

I am excited to read more and join Sheila on her journey of searching Scripture to find what God has promised us and what His promises mean.

Would you like to read along too? Thomas Nelson Publishers has given me five books to giveaway to my readers. Yeah! Oh, and did I mention that this book includes an in-depth Bible study? So, you can grab a group of friends to read along with you and do the study together.

I'm reminded of God's promise to me in John 14:1 - Do not let your heart be troubled; believe in God and believe also in Me. My time on earth can be overwhelming and I'm reminded that if things went smoothly it would make me want to stay here and not long for heaven to be with Him. Thankfully, scripture reminds me to lean on Him and that He is in control. I'm thankfully that I serve an mighty God.

Sometimes you scare me... and I mean that in a good way. Both my parents, for reasons they will not go into, have deserted me. There is no contact at all with them. They have deserted not only me and my husband, but we also have 2 young children whom they have turned their backs on as well, all the while pointing the fingers of blame to me and telling me that if I wanted a relationship, I would make it happen. But numerous times of trying to make amends has not worked. The reason I say you scare me is b/c I had just woke up from another dream where they were ignoring me and nothing I could do was right, and what did I do but turn on the computer, get on FB and then on here. But I did not turn to God. I felt convicted as I read. So, thanks for pointing me in the right direction. These are the promise I am standing on: that God created me, loves me and accepts me, that He knows my heart, that with His help I can be a better parent than what I have known.

Bless you, Jess. You are an encouragement to me.

I am standing on the promises of hope and heaven today. A teacher at my children's school is dealing with the unthinkable as her 3 year old was just diagnosed with neuroblastoma this past weekend - it has spread to his bones and prognosis is not good. We are all in such shock and my heart is breaking for this sweet innocent little boy and his mama and daddy. Our little community has been rocked by this terrible thing and many are wondering "why God?" I've thought of you over and over these past few days and how you chose to stand in faith even under the worst circumstances - I'm praying this family will be able to do the same...

One promise I've always stood on is that "no weapon formed against me shall prosper". (Isaiah 54:17) I believe that no matter what devises the enemy uses, I can always stand victorious. It doesn't always feel like it, but it sure gives me hope! I love that and Jeremiah 29:11~ God's thoughts towards me are to prosper me and give me hope! But we know that God is bigger than statistics. We cling to the truth that He is sovereign. He promises us eternal life if we believe in him. He assures us that he uses our pain to mold and shape us. In losing our first child God revealed to me His promises in Psalm 139 which has now become my life verse. It comforts my heart to know he planned every second of my son's life to be used to glorify Him and that He new every moment I was experiencing which meant it was for good and therefore beautiful. What a gift :)!

You have searched me, LORD,
and you know me.
You know when I sit and when I rise;
you perceive my thoughts from afar.
You discern my going out and my lying down;
you are familiar with all my ways.
Before a word is on my tongue
you, LORD, know it completely.
You hem me in behind and before,
and you lay your hand upon me.
Such knowledge is too wonderful for me,
too lofty for me to attain. Psalm 139:1-6
