the shelter of God's promises {a giveaway}
Where do you turn for shelter in the worst storms of life?
At my Bible study a few weeks ago, our lecturer said that we turn to the phone before we turn to the throne...or texting, or blogs, or facebook, or twitter, or however we stay connected with people. So true. We often run to the first available person, looking for a quick fix. Someone to listen to our worries or sorrows. Someone to assure us that everything is going to be okay. And yet we fail to go straight to our Maker, The One who knows us best. We are swayed by our ever changing emotions and forget to stand firm on God's Truth. We forget to stand under the shelter of God's promises. And God's promises will never fail us!
I just started reading The Shelter of God's Promises by Sheila Walsh. As I read the first chapter I was struck by these words:
I would not have made it this far without the promises of God.
As I began thinking about the promises of God and what they have meant to me in my life, I could so relate to those words. I would not have made it to where I am today without the promises of God. When Cora died I was forced to ask myself if I really believed God's promises. Did I really believe what I had always said I believe? I had to choose to hold onto God's promises when everything around me was falling apart. And I am so thankful I did. God's promises are true. God's promises are dependable. God's promises give us hope and a future even when everything else comes crashing down. There is no way I would have made it this far without the promises of God.
I am excited to read more and join Sheila on her journey of searching Scripture to find what God has promised us and what His promises mean.
Would you like to read along too? Thomas Nelson Publishers has given me five books to giveaway to my readers. Yeah! Oh, and did I mention that this book includes an in-depth Bible study? So, you can grab a group of friends to read along with you and do the study together.

He will never leave me or forsake me! Amen! God Bless you Jess! (my blog: http://shadowofthesteeple.blogspot.com )
Today as what would be our twin girls' fifth birthday, His promise and hope of heaven, of eternal life, is soothing to my sad and grieving heart. And the comfort in knowing and believing that God's purpose is greater than my grief and pain. Thank you!
His mercies are new every morning! And I will never leave you nor forsake you. Two promises I am standing on. :)
I'm reminded of God's promise to me in John 14:1 - Do not let your heart be troubled; believe in God and believe also in Me. My time on earth can be overwhelming and I'm reminded that if things went smoothly it would make me want to stay here and not long for heaven to be with Him. Thankfully, scripture reminds me to lean on Him and that He is in control. I'm thankfully that I serve an mighty God.
I'm standing under God's promise, "In this world you will have trouble, but take heart, I have overcome the world!!" Amen!
Sometimes you scare me... and I mean that in a good way. Both my parents, for reasons they will not go into, have deserted me. There is no contact at all with them. They have deserted not only me and my husband, but we also have 2 young children whom they have turned their backs on as well, all the while pointing the fingers of blame to me and telling me that if I wanted a relationship, I would make it happen. But numerous times of trying to make amends has not worked. The reason I say you scare me is b/c I had just woke up from another dream where they were ignoring me and nothing I could do was right, and what did I do but turn on the computer, get on FB and then on here. But I did not turn to God. I felt convicted as I read. So, thanks for pointing me in the right direction. These are the promise I am standing on: that God created me, loves me and accepts me, that He knows my heart, that with His help I can be a better parent than what I have known.
Bless you, Jess. You are an encouragement to me.
He is always God and always good.
James 1:5 - If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.
"Running to the phone before the Throne" - very convicting!
(i need this book!)
the promise?
as my little man would sing for you: he's still workin' on me, to make me what i ought to be! it took him just a week to make the moon and the stars, the sun and the earth and jupiter and mars! how loving and patient he must be! cuz he's still workin' on me :-)
that's not a scripture, but it's totally biblical, so i'm stickin with it.
His mercies are new every morning. Praise the Lord!
that He is always there...walking with me and carrying me when I need it...
thank you for this post...I truly enjoy reading your thoughts. your post on being intentional with your time a few weeks ago has stuck with me!
that I am not alone. Being a single mom is alot harder than people think, and everyday I am reminded that God will not leave me and that I am really not alone.

He is real and he loves me. Those are the promises I hang on to. Would love to get this book to discover more about God and his promises.
I am living in the promise of Hope today!
The promise that He has HIS timing figured out and everything w/ my move will get done despite not feeling well. Hope you're doin well Jess! I LOVE your blog and inspiration. Kelli
(kellipeterson.blogspot.com)
The word says in Isaiah 26:3 You Lord give Perfect peace to those who keep their purpose firm and put their trust in you! I need that perfect peace!
Sounds like an interesting read!
One of the promises I always keep in mind - Jer. 29:11.
God never fails!
When I can't figure things out..my promise is.
I will direct your steps ( Proverbs 3:5-6 )
Love your blog today today Jess. God Bless.
today the promise i am standing under is based on job 42:2: I know You can do all things, and that no purpose of Yours can be thwarted.
great giveaway! i hope i win ;-)
Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. Romans 8:1
Beauty from Ashes! Oh, how I live by His proclaimation of restoration and redemption!
I would love to win a copy! I love readin Shelia Walsh. I had the pleasure to hear her speak several years ago at a Women of Faith conference and was greatly touched. I am standing under the promise that He will provide and will not leave me stranded!
I could definitely use the encouragement of this book -- He will never leave us nor forsake us!!!
This looks like a great book and I have been trying to find a book to base my upcoming devotion for a women's retreat. This may just be the trick!
I love Romans 8:31-32 "If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how will He not with Him also freely give us all things?"
Psalms 34:4
I sought the LORD, and he answered me;
he delivered me from all my fears.
If I ask He will respond, maybe not the way I want, but He is there!
My fears are also dust because He has taken them from me.
I really like Sheila Walsh. I can imagine that this is a great book.
Sounds simple, but the promise that has meant the most and really changed my life is the sweet beauty of "God loves me"...yes me, even me...a lot. :)
As a pastor's wife, I'm clinging to this promise:
For God is not so unjust as to overlook your work and the love that you showed for his sake in serving the saints as you still do.
Hebrews 6:10
I am standing under the promise of new life that he has blessed me with. I know that this baby is his and I must only be a nurturer to teach them about him.
His promise to provide.
His promise to never leave me and always provide. But more importantly his promise of heaven and eternal life where one day I will see my angel granddaughter, Sophia again. She would have been 3 years old on March 27th. We miss her so much but are grateful for the promise of one day seeing her again. God Bless you and your family!
Hi promise to never leave or forsake me. :)

I love that God promises never to leave me. No matter how bad I mess up he is always there waiting for me to come home
Today it's, Great is your faithfulness -- your mercies are new every morning.
The Lord is my portion and my cup.
The more obedient I remain, the better the blessings. It's amazing to be able to look back and thank Jesus for getting me through the difficulties in my marriage.
I am standing firm in His promises of an Eternal life with Him. His promise to send signs that will ready us for that eternal life. What a glorious day it will be!
man, this is so encouraging! I have really needed this lately!! Right now, I'm resting on all of God's promises about his GOODNESS...specifically Psalm 145 this week!!!!
I am standing on the promises of hope and heaven today. A teacher at my children's school is dealing with the unthinkable as her 3 year old was just diagnosed with neuroblastoma this past weekend - it has spread to his bones and prognosis is not good. We are all in such shock and my heart is breaking for this sweet innocent little boy and his mama and daddy. Our little community has been rocked by this terrible thing and many are wondering "why God?" I've thought of you over and over these past few days and how you chose to stand in faith even under the worst circumstances - I'm praying this family will be able to do the same...
Love Sheila...she is amazing! I am standing under the promise that He is our Redeemer! He has saved me not only saved me from death..but from my own insecurities, and my own foolishness. How great is our God!!!

Jesus loves me, this I know; for the Bible tells me so!
So simple, yet so profound.
Would love to win a copy of this book to start a Bible study small group next month with my friends.
This book looks amazing! For me, the most difficult and rewarding of God's Promise is to trust Him and that it's HIS plan and not ours.
Aww what a great give-away. I'm currently reading Living Simply: Choosing Less in a World of More by Joanne Heim. It's pretty good so far. I love your blog, even if I do stalk it quietly without ever commenting very much. OH and I must say I LOVED the song you posted the other day, I replayed it over and over. Thanks for sharing it with us.
This book sounds like something I need to be reading right now! How often we forget where God has brought us from and the protection he has provided along way. Thanks for sharing this post and letting me know about this book!!
And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. Romans 8:28
God has a plan even if I don't understand or know the what the plan is. I have had to hold tight to God's promises with the birth of my second child would has down syndrome.
I can do all things through Him who strengthens me. Thank you for being a wonderful reminder of God's gifts in my life!!
One promise I've always stood on is that "no weapon formed against me shall prosper". (Isaiah 54:17) I believe that no matter what devises the enemy uses, I can always stand victorious. It doesn't always feel like it, but it sure gives me hope! I love that and Jeremiah 29:11~ God's thoughts towards me are to prosper me and give me hope! Those two verses are so precious to me, someone who battles daily with depression, but has overcome by the blood of the Lamb!
I love the quote "we turn to the phone before we turn to the throne" very powerful. How often do we as woman do this? I also loved the comment "you scare me" her heartfelt feelings were quite powerful.
The Lords promises are SURE, this I know. I have been blessed beyond my wildest dreams. I have a LOVING husband and soon to be NINE amazing children! If the LORD was not a part of our life, I don't think we would have succeeded these last 21 years.
May the LORD continue to bless you and your sweet family!
Heather--Fredericksburg, VA
The promise that He will never forsake me!
Our 9 year old son, Micah has had cancer 2 times since he was 5. The Doctors predict that it will come again. We will be out of treatment options when it comes back. But we know that God is bigger than statistics. We cling to the truth that He is sovereign. He promises us eternal life if we believe in him. He assures us that he uses our pain to mold and shape us. He promises He will never leave us and will carry us when we can't walk on our own. What a great God we serve.
I have never commented before, but have read your blog for a long time and have been blessed by your writing. Thank you.
Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill His promises to her!
Luke 1:45
Would love to read this book.
I find comfort in knowing that even in the most difficult times God will carry me through the storm.

"Before you were born, I set you apart."
Jeremiah 1:5
I have been so blessed by your blog. You have a beautiful family, both on earth and in heaven!

Good post, thank you for making me think about Gods promises today. One of my favorites is the fact that it is HE who sustains us... Even to your old age, I am He, And even to gray hairs I will carry you! I have made, and I will bear; Even I will carry, and will deliver you.

Holding onto Psalm 139:13-16 and covering my children with those words. Thank you!
Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up. James 4:10
I am also very partial to:
"If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness." 1 John 1:9
I am standing on the promise that God knows the plans that he has made for me. Even when I don't understand I know that He knows.
I lost my best friend, my mama, one week ago today. It has been a week that I have truly felt lifted up by the Lord. I have tried not to be swallowed up in my own grief to know how lucky I was to have my mama for 40 years. I cannot imagine any loss worse than the loss of a child. My heart breaks for those who have.
"This light and momentary affliction is yielding for you an eternal weight of glory far beyond all comparison."
"And my God will supply all your needs according to HIS glorious riches IN Christ Jesus." So appreciate your blog, your honesty and your willingnesst to share your journey with us.
Love your giveaways Jess! :) One of my favorite promises is Lamentations 3:22-24 "Because of the Lord's great love we are not consumed, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness. I say to myself, 'The Lord is my portion, therefore I will wait for Him.'"
The joy of the Lord is my strength!
I'd love to read a copy ;-)
He is ALWAYS faithful.
I cling to the promise that God has a purpose for my pain. These trials are for a greater plan that I will never fully understand. Dawn

I would love this book. I am standing under the promise of Romans 8:28
Right now I am struggling to find my place in this world. I'm weighing my options and really just trying to figure out which path to take. I'm litterally staring divorce in the face....or do I stay in this unhealthy, abusive relationship as I have for many years..? Either way, God has promised to never leave my side. I know He is here and listening when I talk....but I'm still so very scared. He calms my fears and I trust in Him to help me through whatever decision I make.
this book sounds amazing! And, I love the new blog layout :)
I am standing on Jeremiah 29:11. Being a Military family and not knowing what is coming next, it's comforting to know that God has it all sorted out for us ahead of time.
That God has far more good things in store for me that I can even possibly image or dream about.
after discovering that my little girl has a focal cortical dysplasia (which more than likely formed in utero) that Psalm 139 is true - specifically that He knit her together - this did not take Him by surprise. Sunshine
The promise very dear and close to my heart is in Jeremiah 29:11. I am so blessed to know that He has a plan for me!
Today, after my kindergartener got into a bit of trouble at school, I am taking comfort in Psalm 103:17. "The mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear Him, and His righteousness to children's children." Thank you for your post today.
I would love to read this book!
My husband and I are going through some major turmoil in our marriage, and I am clinging onto God's promise that he will work all things (even this horrible situation I'm in) for my good because I love him and believe in his name.
Your blog and faith are so inspirational to me! I just ate lunch with my toddler on the back deck and I would not be enjoying those blessings if we didn't put of faith in God that he would provide for us, allowing me to SAH- he makes good on those to who believe! :)
Standing firm in the promise that God is always with me.
Thanks!!!
Melissa
I would love to win this book! I was just talking with a good friend about wanting a good bible study and this sounds perfect! Totally convicting post-running to the phone instead of the throne. Jessica,
My husband is having open-heart surgery on March 24th, so we are resting in the promises of either God's healing here on earth, or being together in heaven if the
surgery does not go as we plan.
Janet D.
He will not give me more than I can handle. I am 39 weeks pregnant and we just found out that our 2 yr old daughter is goign to have to have the open heart surgery in the next couple months that she was supposed to have last year but was cancelled due to good reports on her heart. It is very overwhelming when I think of doing this without God. But I know I am not alone.

The promise of God's hope is that I will be reunited with my grandmother again and I will be able to see all the loved ones gone before me. He gives us the hope of everlasting life. For this, do not be afraid to die.
The promise that my girls and I talk about often is the one of heaven. No tears, no owees. The knowledge that our baby is in heaven has gotten me though the last few months. Thanks, Jess! Happy reading!
would love this book :o)
He has promised to supply every need we have. Phillipians 4:19. God has obligated Himself only to the extent of our needs-not luxuries that we have come to think of as needs.
I will put my trust in him and know that he is ALWAYS in control. I reminded myself of this when I did IVF and after my daughter was born with problems and stayed in the NICU for a month.
I love how this book said that! I often turn to fb, or txting instead of God...
His promise to me that I often stand on is: that he will never leave me or forsake me!
John 14:1-3
Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.
He will never give me more than I can handle in one day and that his mercies are new each morning.
This book sounds wonderful and I would enjoy the bible study too!
I cling to the fact that God is sovereign in all things. In the happy things and in the gut wrenching, heart breaking things. He is good and He is sovereign.

On Monday, March 21st I have to face a second surgery to do some repair to the aneurysm. I'm trusting in Him to bring me home healthy and well to my 4 children!
I am holding onto God's promise that I am truly loved by Him! Thank you!

"Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have recieved from God. He is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. Ps.34:18
… He works things for the good and He is God. This would be a wonderful addition to my reading list this year.
after my beloved papa bud died and my family had to relocate 200 miles away (all within 3 weeks) i felt so sad. and then 3 months later we found out we were having a baby. God promised to never leave me alone and He hasnt. I see my grandfathers sweet smile in my baby girl!
A friend's 27 year old son died recently in a tragic accident. My friend's granddaughter was out to eat shortly after it happened. She looked up at the waitress and said, "My Uncle Scott died. But he's in Heaven with God and he's happy, so it's OK." Reminded us of God's promise of life ever after with him.
“Because he[b] loves me,” says the LORD, “I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name. He will call on me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him. With long life I will satisfy him and show him my salvation.” Psalm 91 14-16. As a cancer survivor I cling to the promise of a long life surrounded by His relentless love! Lisa A, Gibbstown, NJ
I can do all things through Christ who strenthens me.
In losing our first child God revealed to me His promises in Psalm 139 which has now become my life verse. It comforts my heart to know he planned every second of my son's life to be used to glorify Him and that He new every moment I was experiencing which meant it was for good and therefore beautiful. What a gift :)!
You have searched me, LORD,
and you know me.
You know when I sit and when I rise;
you perceive my thoughts from afar.
You discern my going out and my lying down;
you are familiar with all my ways.
Before a word is on my tongue
you, LORD, know it completely.
You hem me in behind and before,
and you lay your hand upon me.
Such knowledge is too wonderful for me,
too lofty for me to attain. Psalm 139:1-6
I would LOVE to have a copy!
I am standing on the promise that the peacemakers are blessed. I am rest in Him and know that all is well.

That God has a plan for me, and He will use it for good!
I work at a small Christian high school in Ohio. Our much-loved principal was diagnosed with a brain tumor this week. It all happened within a matter of days.

Thanks for sharing! Sounds like a great read! I have followed for a while but don't often comment. I love your blog and think your faith is truly inspiring. I'm also a KS girl (live in Olathe, outside of KC). I would have to say the He has a plan, and it is for good. He's fulfilled this countless time, and it continues to encourage me when things get hard.
Thank you for your blog. You give me such strength every time I read it. I have a dad who has been fighting stage 4 esophageal cancer for the past year, and I stand on the promise that no matter what the future holds for my dad, I will get to spend eternity with him in heaven one day where he will no longer be suffering from this terrible disease!
I'm reminded of the hymn "Standing, standing, standing on the promises of God my Savior." One of my favorites - "He's my all-in-all!"

That HIS promises are true!
His love and goodness, His working in my best interest is not contingent upon what I do or do not do~ He is 100% all the time faithful! I can count on Him to be ever-present and never-changing even when things around me are a little shaky.
I would love to read this book. Seven of our eight children are in heaven, and I cling tightly to the promise that He will be the God of our children, since we belong to Him. We are so thankful for His covenant promises!
...that His JOY is my strength!
God's grace!
As we continue to pray for sweet Kate, we cling to God's promise that His plan is perfect. Thanks for always sharing from your heart!

"Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much mor valuable then they? Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?" Matthew 6:26-27
God is an Awesome God.

That he will give me nothing I can't handle and he will always provide!
Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV)
11 For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

God's promises are so amazing!! My favorite quote is "when you can't trace His hand, you can always trust His heart"!
He will never forsake me.
His promise to me today is that he will not leave us in the cold, dead days of winter (physically and spiritually), as today is the first day of Spring (and my little girls 3rd birthday).
Thank you so much for your constant encouragement and steadfastness in the Lord.
This is the promise I have clung to these past few months:
Ps 34:18
The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.
Thank you.
He will provide financially for my husband and I.
God's promise of eternal life means the most to me! What an awesome promise!
He has already won the victory!
He is the Good Shepherd and He takes care of His sheep. I'm trusting that He is who He says He is.
After the tragedy in our hometown this weekend, a beautiful day in the park went wrong when the children's train derailed. One child lost his life and many others were critically injured I am trying to hold on to God's promise the He will never leave us and that He is in control.
Thanks for the giveaway!
Also - the new blog design is so cute!
I would love to win this book... underneath are His everlasting arms. He will hold us in the trials that threaten to wash us away. I would like to give this book to a friend who recently lost her husband and is facing his birthday this week. May God bless you for sharing
He came so that I may have life and live it more abundantly!
That His mercies are new every morning and that He will never leave me or forsake me.
