starting our garden

We finally had a beautiful day with no wind this weekend. Perfect weather for starting our garden.

Joel had tilled up the dirt a few weeks ago. He started planting the corn while I went inside to get our little helper up from his nap.

I really didn't think Levi would be too interested in our gardening project. Lately when we go outside he only wants to do two things: swing or go for a wagon ride. If I am busy doing something else he will stand under the swing or next to the wagon with his arms out begging...please play with me mama!

But Levi's fun dad talked him into coming over and helping him.

And it turned out that Levi thought planting potatoes was pretty great.

Levi put every potato in a hole. Joel handed them to him one by one.

His favorite part was throwing them in.

And my favorite part was the high five after every successful potato toss. So sweet.

We planted onions too.

Actually, Levi tore his onion apart while Joel planted all the onions...and I took pictures of Joel planting the onions.
I did help though. When Levi remembered that he actually liked his wagon better than gardening, Joel took him on a wagon ride and I planted the lettuce.

But if you want to know the truth...Joel is the real brains behind our garden. He is the farmer after all. I am slowly learning, but most of the time I just beg him to help me or tell me what to do...kind of like Levi begging to be pushed on the swing. :)

So the garden is officially started. I can't wait until it is time to eat all of our yummy vegetables. And I am so thankful to have a little helper this year...he makes gardening even more fun!

these are such CUTE pictures! The high five one was my favorite. I'm eager to see your garden as it flourishes. My husband and I would love to plant a bit this Spring/Summer... I just don't have a green thumb {like, at all} and I'm worried I'd depress the fam by killing all our food.

What a lovely posting... those pictures are priceless. And you look so pretty in the picture with Levi... simply glowing.

Enjoy the spring weather; I live in Missouri so I understand the joy of no wind as we get most of your weather a day or so later.

Have a great day and thanks for sharing your family!

These are such sweet photos! Sounds like you have a lot of deliciousness coming your way. It is so great that your little guy is learning early about growing things. I joined a CSA this year, can't wait to get my little one year old out in the dirt!

These pictures are beautiful! Levi looks like such a little toddler already. Homegrown veggies are the best during the summer! Our neighbors have a garden and are so nice to share with us, I of course bake them cookies in return which seems like a good trade off. :)

We only have potatoes planted in our garden right now. It is too wet and cold here now to plant anything else yet! I'm a little jealous!

the potato-tossing and high-five pictures are priceless! also, a good encouragement that I can get my gang to pitch in and help plant (my boys are usually more into seeing "how big a hole you can dig right in the middle of delicate growing plants!"

We've started on our garden as well. We've got the peas in and this year we are trying potatoes, asparagus and onions. I'm thinking the carrots need to go in here soon as well. Otherwise, we have to wait in our neck of the woods until about May 15th to plant the rest. I'm excited to try canning some new stuff this year. I'm hoping Emmy Jo enjoys the garden this year. She's 20 months now. She enjoyed the dirt last year. I'm hoping to put her to work picking strawberries (: Good luck with the garden!
